Cost Engineer/Estimator

Schultz Construction is seeking an Cost Engineer/Estimator. This is a fulltime year-round position.

The successful candidates must be self-motivated and work well in an organization that is professional and goal oriented. This position provides the opportunity for growth within the company within estimating or operations.

Position Description:

The responsibility of a Cost Engineer/Estimator will be to fully review and familiarize themselves with all awarded projects in order to create a detailed construction plan. This plan must have relateable operational objectives which can be easily measured in the field with trackable metrics that will allow management to ascertain labor performance in a simple scorecard as the job is completed. This individual will work with estimating and field resources to develop this plan and translate the associated budget into cost codes based on the original estimate.

This individual will have secondary duties closely associated with the primary objective in either estimating or operations but must manage priorities for the preconstruction activities. A similar process will be completed for change orders to keep the process intact.

Description of Responsibilities:

  • Review bid specs, plans, site photos, and associated documents as well as any onsite walkthroughs to completely familiarize yourself with the project.
  • Meet with estimating and field staff to plan the project.
  • Break the project estimate apart in order to reassemble into specific operational increments with units of measure that the field can understand and accurately record quantities every day.
  • Outline the labor productivity to achieve each of the operational increments in order to develop measurable production metrics.
  • Interface with estimating to develop a set a cost codes around the operational increments.
  • Interface with accounting to upload the cost code budget into the electronic data gathering software the field uses to input quantities, labor, and daily data.
  • Review daily logs and weekly productivity reports to ensure the system is working. Investigate and correct when it is not.
  • Train field staff at the onset of projects as well as new staff on how to use the system.
  • Establishes, promotes, and protects W.M. Schultz Construction’s Core Values & Codes of Conduct including diversity, teamwork, fair work environment, and respects others. Maintains a “team” spirit within the business unit. Works and cooperates with other disciplines (across company lines) to ensure maximum and best use of resources.
  • Promotes and protects the community perception of W.M. Schultz.
  • Gathers feedback and continuously makes improvements to work processes and practices.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Have at least 8 years of combined construction estimating and operational experience in project management or the field completing civil construction projects including but not limited to bridge, road, and treatment plant builds.
  • The employee is expected to be based in our Ballston Spa, NY office full time with the expectation of a salary based on a 50 hour work week. Based on project startup demands, hours need to be flexible based on workload. Some weekend work may be expected occasionally.
  • Have working knowledge of automated estimating software systems, scheduling programs, and proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Have the ability to interpret and communicate complex information to all relevant staff. A superior candidate needs to be able to handle multiple personalities and working in a team environment.
  • Be open to innovative thinking and methodology when evaluating project constructability.
  • This individual must be able to communicate and document the plan in a detailed method
